We Welcome Vanessa Frizzell

By Key Murray Law Team

Vanessa Frizzell didn’t originally plan to become a lawyer.

She began her academic journey at the University of Prince Edward Island on a path toward healthcare.

With a strong interest in helping others, Vanessa started her undergraduate degree in biology, imagining a future in medicine.

But as her studies progressed, something shifted. It was her psychology courses, and a growing curiosity about people, systems, and how they intersect, that began to reshape her direction.

Vanessa ultimately completed a double major in Biology and Psychology at UPEI.
After graduating during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, she found herself at a crossroads, unsure of what came next.

Encouraged by mentors with experience in the legal system, Vanessa decided to explore law. What began as a leap into the unknown quickly became the right fit.

“Once I got into law school, I realized it really aligned with who I am,” she said. “It gave me a way to help people, but also to advocate for them on a larger scale.”

Vanessa went on to attend the University of New Brunswick, where she earned her law degree and began to shape her interests in advocacy and client-focused work.

During this time, she developed a deeper understanding of systemic issues within the legal system, including the relationship between criminal law, social supports, and access to justice. These experiences continue to influence her perspective as she begins her practice.

When Vanessa began exploring work opportunities, one firm stood out.

After connecting with members of the team and learning more about the firm’s culture, Vanessa applied to Key Murray Law, her first and only application.

She joined the firm as a summer student following her second year of law school, returned to complete her articles, and now begins her career here as an associate.

“I genuinely feel like it’s the right fit,” she said. “The environment, the people, the flexibility. It all aligns with what I was looking for.”

Vanessa is building a general practice with a strong interest in litigation, including family law, criminal law, civil litigation, employment, administrative law, and wills and estates. She is particularly drawn to advocacy and enjoys the problem-solving nature of litigation work.

Her approach to law is grounded in empathy, honesty, and connection. Vanessa places a strong emphasis on understanding her clients and meeting them where they are.
“I think people just want to feel heard and respected,” she said. “A lot of the time, they’re coming to you during a really difficult moment. Being able to understand that and communicate clearly is really important.”

She also prioritizes transparency, recognizing that for many clients, navigating the legal system can feel overwhelming or unfamiliar.

“It’s about putting yourself in the client’s position and thinking about what you would want in that situation,” she said.

Born and raised in Charlottetown, Vanessa values the opportunity to practice law in the same community that she grew up in.

She sees her role not just as a legal professional, but as someone contributing to the ongoing growth and well-being of Prince Edward Island.

“There’s something really meaningful about serving the community you grew up in,” she said. “You’re part of it. You understand it. You have a role in shaping it.”

Outside the office, Vanessa enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at the beach, and staying active through yoga and Pilates.

As she begins this next chapter, Vanessa is focused on growth, continuing to build her skills, deepen her knowledge, and provide meaningful support to her clients.

At the core of it all is a simple motivation: helping people.

“That’s always been the goal,” she said. “And law gives me the opportunity to do that in a way that really matters.”

We’re proud to welcome Vanessa to Key Murray Law and look forward to seeing her practice grow.
