Zachary Pierce didn’t set out to become a lawyer.
As a student at the University of Prince Edward Island, he was on a different path, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology with plans to enter the healthcare field.
But everything changed after taking an introductory law course.
Zachary found himself drawn not just to the substance of the law, but the to the way it challenged him to think, solve problems, and connect with people.
That curiosity led him to Dalhousie University, where he completed his law degree and built the foundation for his legal career.
After securing a summer position with Key Murray Law during his second year, Zachary returned to the firm to article and has been here ever since, now joining the firm as our newest associate.
Zachary is building a broad, general practice and is eager to gain experience across multiple areas of law.
He credits much of his growth not only to his legal education, but to the hands-on experience and mentorship he’s received at the firm.
Zachary has been influenced by the firm’s emphasis on being a trusted advisor, a philosophy that shapes how he approaches both his work and his clients.
For Zachary, this means more than simply providing legal answers. It means being someone clients can turn to when they don’t know where else to go, helping them navigate not only legal issues, but the broader challenges that often come with them
“People don’t always come to a lawyer with a clear question,” he said. “Sometimes it’s just ‘I don’t know what to do.’ Being able to help guide someone through that. That’s what really matters.”
That mindset is especially important in a place like Prince Edward Island, where community connections run deep and accessibility matters.
Born and raised on the Island, Zachary understands both the strengths and challenges of practicing law in a close-knit community. He sees his role not as someone removed from it, but as part of it, someone people can rely on.
“The legal system can feel inaccessible,” he said. “Not just financially, but in terms of knowing where to start. I think it’s important to be someone who people feel comfortable reaching out to.”
Zachary brings that same sense of community into his life outside the office. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Hospice PEI, an experience that has given him a deeper appreciation for an often-overlooked aspect of healthcare. With close family ties to the medical field, and his own academic background in science, he values the opportunity to support an organization focused on compassionate care.
He also stays active in the local hockey community, refereeing with the Greater Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association. Having grown up around the game, the rink is a familiar and meaningful space.
During law school, Zachary combined that love of hockey with community impact by co-organizing a charity hocket game between Dalhousie and UNB law students in support of Special Olympics. The initiative raised thousands of dollars and has since grown into an annual event, something he’s especially proud to see continue.
When he’s not working, Zachary enjoys golfing, travelling, and spending time with family, friends, and his two cats Aloha and Maui.
As he begins his next chapter with Key Murray Law, Zachary is focused on growth, both professionally and personally. His goals aren’t defined by titles or milestones, but by a commitment to continuous learning, strong work ethics, and doing the best he can for every client he serves.
“I just want to keep improving,” he said. “To learn, to grow, and to make sure I’m doing the best work I can for the people who rely on me.”
We’re proud to have Zachary on our team and look forward to seeing his practice develop in the years ahead.
