Welcome to our Newest Associate

By Key Murray Law Team

Megan Butler has heard it most of her life: “You’d make a good lawyer.”

Growing up in Western Prince Edward Island, she was known for being quick-thinking, level-headed, and never one to shy away from problem solving.

That eventually became a clear career path. One she’s now stepping into as she joins Key Murray Law as our newest associate.

Megan was born and raised in the O’Leary area, with family roots in West Point and Miminegash. Coming from a small, rural community, she always knew she wanted to build a career that would allow her to stay connected to home. That goal shaped her decisions early on, including where she hoped to practice law.

After beginning her studies at the University of New Brunswick, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Economics, Megan continued on at UNB to complete her law degree.

She speaks highly of the experience, with a strong sense of community among students and the collaborative environment that helped shape her both personally and professionally.
From the outset of law school, Megan had a clear goal in mind: to work at a firm where she could serve her community.

Early in her first year, she took the initiative to introduce herself to Key Murray Law. That initiative paid off. Megan returned to the firm for both summer terms, completed her articles here, and now joins the team as an associate.

Megan is building a general practice and is particularly interested in family law, estate planning, criminal defence, fisheries, and personal injury.

Her connection to fisheries law is especially personal. Growing up in a fishing community and coming from a fishing family, she brings a practical understanding of the industry and the people behind it, something she values in her work.

Her approach to law is grounded in empathy, reliability, and common sense. Megan strives to create an environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their situations without fear of judgment, and where legal advice is clear, fair, and easy to understand.

“I want people to walk away feeling like things make sense,” she said. “Not confused and not like they didn’t get their fair outcome.”

She also prides herself on being dependable: following through on commitments, communicating clearly, and ensuring clients feel supported throughout the legal process. Her steady approach allows her to navigate complex situations while staying focused on practical solutions.

During law school, Megan was actively involved in volunteer work that helped shape her perspective as a lawyer.

Through Pro Bono Students Canada, she worked with the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association, reinforcing her interest in fisheries law and community-based work.

She also volunteered with the Prison Law Society, experiences that strengthened her commitment to advocacy and confirmed her interest in working directly with clients.

Outside of her legal work, Megan remains deeply involved in her community. She serves on the Board of Directors for the West Point Development Corporation, which oversees the West Point Lighthouse, one of the Island’s most recognizable landmarks, as well as a museum, event centre, and restaurant. The organization plays a key role in tourism, heritage preservation, and local job creation, particularly for students.

Megan is also a board member with the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Celtic culture through music, dance, and performance.

When she’s not working, Megan enjoys reading, curling, and spending time at home with her two cats.

As she begins this next chapter, Megan is focused on growth. Building confidence, developing her skills, and becoming increasingly independent in her practice.
Her goal is simple: for clients to walk through the door with a problem and leave with clear, practical answers.

Megan is motivated by problem-solving and by the trust clients place in her during some of the most challenging moments in their lives.

“When people come to see you, it’s usually because something important is going on,” she said. “Being able to help them resolve that… that’s what makes the work meaningful.”

We’re proud to welcome Megan to Key Murray Law and look forward to seeing her continue to grow within the firm and the community she calls home.
