Opportunities - Articled Clerks & Summer Students

As Prince Edward Island’s largest independent law firm, we have the capacity to offer law students one-on-one training in every area of law that our lawyers practise.

We believe students learn best by doing what lawyers do. From the start, you will be given active files with client responsibility and will gain exposure to a wide variety of practice areas. You will shadow lawyers in client meetings and attend in court either to observe or to participate as may be permitted under the Legal Profession Act. In addition, business development and community involvement are two of our firm’s key values, and our articled clerks and summer students participate in client marketing events alongside our lawyers.

Our articled clerks and summer students will be mentored by multiple lawyers and will have an opportunity to work with multiple lawyers within the firm, in all practice areas. These include administrative law, business and corporate law, criminal law, employment and labour law, family law, litigation and dispute resolution, municipal law, personal injury, property and real estate law, and wills and estates.

Summer Student Applications

Every year we accept applications from prospective summer student candidates for positions in each of our Charlottetown and Summerside offices. Students interested in the professional growth opportunities offered in our team-based environment are invited to apply. Interested candidates are asked to send a current CV, cover letter, transcripts and reference letters to Sarah Knox.

What are your target hours?
There is no set target for billable hours for articling or summer students. It’s more important that our clerks and students gain the training and experience they need to become excellent associates.
How many articled clerks and summer students do you hire?
We typically hire between 1 to 2 articled clerks and summer students each year, although this varies from time to time based on need.
What is the compensation for articled clerks and summer students?
We pay a market rate comparable to other mid to large sized firms.

Is there a formal rotation?
There is a planned 3 week rotation in place in our Charlottetown and Summerside offices which exposes each student to the entire spectrum of practice groups, geographical nuances, and the varying issues and tasks of each group.
